“A Stable Future”
Since the resurrection of the Bethlehem Police Mounted Patrol Unit in 2009, after a sixty-three year hiatus, officers assigned to the unit have had a dream. Their dream is to provide their four legged partners with an up-to-date, safer stable and training facility within the City of Bethlehem that will ensure a horse healthy environment. The horses’ current stable at Burnside Plantation, while historic and quaint, is not conducive to proper grass turnout, care, and safety. Improvements on site are not possible due to the historic surroundings. Lack of warm water and safe training areas, as well as less than one acre of turnout for four horses, makes it a struggle for officers to keep their horses healthy while providing horse mounted patrols in the City of Bethlehem and beyond. A new stable facility will ensure that the Bethlehem Mounted Patrol Unit’s horses have “A Stable Future.”
In 2013, this dream began to trot closer to reality with the establishment of the Friends of the Bethlehem Mounted Police as a not-for-profit corporation charged with supporting the Unit. Board members, along with the officers assigned to the unit, approached Bethlehem’s Chief of Police and Mayor with their goal for a new facility. Approval of the future stable facility was granted, to be located on land owned by the Diocese of Allentown near Holy Savior Cemetery off of Linden St. With help from friends, companies, and corporations, this dream will soon be galloping toward reality.
The new stable facility will provide the Bethlehem Mounted Patrol Unit with updated stalls for its horses including additional space to accommodate their peers, such as the Lancaster City Mounted Patrol, during Bethlehem’s Musikfest each August. Included in critical support features will be: warm water for a horse wash and groom stall; a washer and dryer for proper cleaning and disinfecting of horse pads and blankets; a meeting space for the Unit to host educational programming such as “Operation HAY (Horses and Youth),” a children’s educational program where they learn about police horses and mounted police work. A properly footed arena will permit the Mounted Patrol Unit to host training with hopes of the facility becoming a preferred site for regional mounted police training. Four acres of grass grazing turnout will allow the Unit’s four horses, Pharaoh, George, Asa, and Grey, the opportunity to graze naturally on grass when they are off duty, thereby promoting healthier, happier partners. In sum, a new, contemporary facility will enable the Bethlehem Mounted Patrol Unit to flourish, and continue to provide unique public safety to the Bethlehem community.

The Stable Building
Along with the updated facilities for the horses and training, the new stable building will provide a dedicated, climate controlled work space for officers along with bathroom and locker room space on the second floor. The stable floor will house several stalls for the Unit’s horses as well as storage space that can be converted to horse stalls when the Unit is joined on site by peer units during regional training or community events. It will also have a meeting room, which also serves as a store that will be open to purchase merchandise supporting the Mounted Unit, a bathroom, and a public atrium which allows for viewing into the stable area. Rounding out the stable floor will be a tack room with washer and dryer, and a wash/groom stall.
Please view the below architect’s renderings for a sneak peek at what the new facility will become. The Friends of the Bethlehem Mounted Police along with the Bethlehem Mounted Patrol Unit would like to thank B&D Builders for their generosity in helping this dream move toward a reality.
